Record Sale Average at Annual Bull Sale
By Jon Angell
Bowling Green – The first Tuesday in April two standing annual events can be counted on. One would be a local election day and the other is the Eastern Missouri Commission Co. Annual Spring Catalog Bull Sale, this year marking its twelfth year. Spring has come early in this part of the country making for plenty to do all at one time. Many area farmers took a brief time out of a busy day to exercise their civic right to vote between planting early corn, spreading fertilizer, and other daily chores ahead of the forecasted rain that blew through right before the late afternoon bull sale kickoff.

Ann Rincker from Shelbyville IL learned first hand about kicking off the sale when she drew by lot from a hat in a consigner meeting shortly before the sale the honor and responsibility to led things off. Her confidence in the quality of her bull was pitted against the knowledge that in previous years it has taken a few drafts of bulls sold below the eventual market average to warm bidders up for the many sale offerings. Uncertainty and pressure was more acute for Ann as she had but one entry for the sale and there would be no second chance to boost her evening’s sale average.

When auctioneer Mike Van Maanen shouted “sold,” Rincker was ecstatic with a selling price of $4025 for her 24 month old Angus bull, over $800 above the evenings $3220 average. Prices ranged from $2250 to $4600 on 40 bulls sold from 19 area seedstock producers. The 40 bulls sold were divided among 28 different buyers which included several perennial buyers as well as several first time EMCC Bull Sale buyers. Although five of these buyers bought multiple bulls the sale wasn’t overly dominated by anyone and bulls were mostly distributed across a broad area and mixture of cattlemen.

Meyer Cattle Co drew the honor and responsibly of setting the final tone for the sale that historically has been characterized by strong prices as reluctant bidders finally get engaged to bring home “a bull” and scramble over the last of the evenings offerings. The break with historical trends set by Rincker at he beginning of the sale gave way to a more traditional finish of strong prices with Meyer Right Answer 1002 a son of SAV Final Answer 0035 topping the sale at $4600 on the evenings last offering.

Consensus of several annual sale attendants shared a very positive impression of this years bull consignments with frequent comments expressing a belief that this year’s offerings where the highest over-all quality ever offered. Last year’s offerings where really good and this year’s overall quality even better leaves us looking forward to building on that trend for next year. Save the date, April 2 of 2013, and plan on participating in the 13th Annual EMCC Catalog Bull Sale.
